TIJUANA – The strong rain that pounded the region Friday night and early Saturday left at least one person dead from an accident at a bus stop and chased more than 20 people from their flooded homes, authorities said.

During the storm around 1:55 a.m. Saturday, a driver lost control of his vehicle, which struck and killed a person at a bus stop in the east-side neighborhood of Mariano Matamoros, said Tijuana Fire Department Cpt. Octavio Aldana. The crash also injured one person, who was transported to a hospital. Neither victim was immediately identified.

Aldana said that a group of people from that same neighborhood were evacuated from their flooded homes and sent to a shelter set up at the sports complex known as CREA.

And in the westside colonia of Castillo, at least 22 people were evacuated after rain flooded their homes.

The heavy rain unleashed the usual problems, such as power outages, traffic accidents, swollen floods and creeks, street flooding and a weakening of walls and fences, which prompted authorities to urge people living in high-risk zones to be ready to evacuate.
