MEXICO.- Video footage from a performance by Miley Cyrus in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon on September 16th (Mexico's Independence Day) prompted anger on social media because of how her disrespectful treatment of the Mexican flag.
In the video, it is clear that the singer (who is wearing a fake butt costume and "twerking") kicks the flag. Then, one of her dancers picks it up and rubs the flag in her fake butt crack and then slaps her with it while she continues to "twerk."

Such an act is not only disrespectful but is also subject to a fine of up to 250 minimum salaries (around $1,200 dollars) or incarceration for up to 36 hours, according to a law that protects national symbols including the flag and the national anthem. Although the actions of Miley Cyrus are even more severe because she is a foreigner and may warrant that she be labeled a "persona non grata" Nuevo Leon's State Congress is limited to fining her or incercerating her.

The Secretary of State for Nuevo Leon was notified of the disrespectful act and will iniatiate an administrative process to fine the singer for harm caused by her offensive use of the Mexican flag.
