DALLAS – The Mexican National Team walked out of the Cowboys' stadium with a 3-1 win over Ecuador in their second of four World Cup preparation matches. But the price they paid for this victory was a bit too steep as two of its starters ended up in the emergency room.
Midfielder Luis Montes opened up the scoring with a long distance shot with his left foot into the top corner in the 32nd minute. What seemed like a soccer party getting started with such a beautiful goal quickly turned ugly for the Mexicans.
Minutes after the goal Montes slide strongly against Ecuador's Segundo Castillo in a 50/50 challenge. Montes ended up kicking Castillo's leg and both players fell injured. Both would have to be taken off the field and Montes rushed to the hospital.
Unconfirmed reports say that Montes suffered a double fracture in the leg and that Castillo suffered torn ligament; which would mean both players would miss the World Cup.
Mexican central defender and team captain Rafael Marquez was also taken to the hospital to for a check to a possible foot fracture. Marquez ended up finishing the first half and was replaced by Carlos Salcido at halftime.
Marco Fabian – who entered the game in place of Montes doubled the lead for Mexico with a long distance shot. Giovani Dos Santos made it 3-0 for Mexico with a powerful shot that bounced off of the post and then off of the goalkeeper's head and finally into the goal.
The "visitors" got one back from the Liga MX Clausura 2014 highest goal scorer Enner Valencia. Valencia blasted a free kick low which was deflected off of the Mexican defense leaving goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa helpless.
Mexico will now head to Chicago to face Bosnia on Tuesday night.
