Mexicali, capital of Baja California, has reached a new milestone: it’s now officially a Platinum-level tourism destination, as recognized by Mexico’s Department of Tourism (SECTUR). This is one of the highest honors a city can receive at the national level.
In a historic first, Mexicali has been awarded the National Tourism Quality Distinction in its Platinum category—SECTUR’s highest possible distinction.
This recognition establishes Mexicali as one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, offering visitors exceptional service and memorable experiences.
“This achievement is the result of collaborative efforts between all three levels of government and the service and commerce sectors,” said Mexicali’s Mayor, Norma Bustamante. “It’s what makes the capital of transformation a leading tourism destination.”
Bustamante also noted that this distinction will boost the service and commerce industries, generating more jobs and improving the quality of attention and amenities offered in the city.
Valid for two years, the certification requires ongoing improvement to retain its status. It also aims to increase visitor satisfaction and support local economic growth.
The certification process was carried out by Mexicali’s Tourism and Convention Committee (COTUCO), which conducted a thorough evaluation of the city’s services to ensure they met SECTUR’s standards.
