On Wednesday, March 26, Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, Mayor of the City of Tijuana, spearheaded the launch of the “Pintemos la Revu” (Let’s Paint la Revu) project. This initiative aims to make Downtown’s iconic Avenida Revolución more beautiful by creating a uniform aesthetic for business facades to revitalize the city’s historic heart.

A tour began at Villa Colonial, where the mayor announced that a new color palette—inspired by 1930s postcards and the famous Café San Francisco, a 1920s cabaret and one of the city’s main landmarks known for its attractive gambling machines—would be used.

“We are committed to strengthening the city’s infrastructure. Today, with this color palette initiative, we aim for all businesses to harmonize their storefronts and collaborate in enhancing the image of Avenida Revolución, an important landmark for Tijuana,” he highlighted.

Accompanied by the Coordinator of Strategic Projects, Carlos Torres, the mayor walked along the avenue to the OXXO store on 2nd Street, where a symbolic section of the establishment was painted. The proposed image redesign was presented, and it was announced that the OXXO chain would participate, with five additional stores adopting the chosen color scheme.

“I am very happy to see the results of these efforts at Avenida Revolución. This is a pivotal moment—we are giving back a little of what this avenue has given us for so many years. I thank the support given by everyone involved in this project,” the mayor said.

A Commitment to Restoring Avenida Revolución’s Cultural Identity

The walk ended at Praga Café Bistro, where the mayor and the Coordinator of Strategic Projects held a brief meeting with local business owners.

“In today’s meeting with several business owners, we asked for in-kind sponsorships. We know some tenants may not have the financial means, but if others can contribute paint, we’d be delighted. We want this project to move dynamically so Avenida Revolución can have a fresh new look,” coordinator Carlos Torres said.

He also mentioned that business owners are enthusiastic and committed to the project. “Based on my experience and what we’ve seen with community projects in Mexicali, I can say that local businesses respond—no one wants to be left out. Sometimes, financial constraints delay restoration efforts, but with the solidarity we’re seeing here from business owners and the community, we’re confident it will move forward.”

The “Pintemos la Revu” project will continue throughout the year. “We’ll go to every single establishment. We’ve already received support from several companies that have provided paint. We’ll start with the block where Villa Colonial is located,” Torres concluded.
