U.S. President Donald Trump recently accused Mexico of being a country that “works in alliance” with cartels and drug trafficking networks. In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a concise reply that has been widely applauded.
“President Trump is taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country. The government of Mexico has afforded safe havens for the cartels to engage in the manufacturing and transportation of dangerous narcotics, which collectively have led to the overdose deaths of hundreds of thousands of American victims. This alliance endangers the national security of the United States, and we must eradicate the influence of these dangerous cartels,” a statement released by the White House read.
Claudia Sheinbaum Responds to Trump’s “Drug Trafficking Alliance” Accusation
In response to Trump’s accusation, Sheinbaum shared a statement asserting that the claims are false accusations against the Mexican government:
“We categorically reject the defamatory claims made by the White House accusing the Government of Mexico of having alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any attempts to interfere in our territory. If such alliances exist anywhere, they exist in the U.S. gun shops that sell high-powered weapons to criminal groups, as demonstrated by the U.S. Department of Justice itself this January.”
She also mentioned that the U.S. president’s decision to increase tariffs by 25% on Mexico and Canada as a “protective” measure against the “extraordinary threat posed by illegal migrants and drugs” is not a viable solution:
“Problems are not solved by imposing tariffs, but through discussion and dialogue, as we have done in recent weeks with the State Department to address the issue of migration – in our case, with respect for human rights.”

“Force Accomplishes Nothing; Reason and Law Prevail”
President Sheinbaum also proposed to the US dialogue sessions through a working group with security and public health teams to address these “issues”:
“…if the United States wants to combat the criminal groups that traffic drugs and cause violence, we must work together comprehensively, but always under the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, collaboration and, above all, respect for sovereignty, which is non-negotiable. Yes to coordination; no to subordination.”
Therefore, Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana reiterated his full support and backing of President Claudia Sheinbaum and her stance against these false accusations.
Through a brief statement on his Facebook profile, the Mayor of Tijuana stated the following:
“From Tijuana, we support President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in defending Mexico’s sovereignty against any false accusation or attempt at interference. Our country has shown through actions its commitment to combating crime and drug trafficking.”
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of dialogue and collaboration, as long as they are carried out under the principles of respect and shared responsibility.
With these tariffs imposed as a measure to “protect Americans”, uncertainty continues among consumers and businesses that could be affected by potential inflation.
