Aiming to give a platform to the ideas, dreams, and leadership of the city’s children, Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz of Tijuana launched the “Childhood in the Presidency” contest, inviting sixth-grade elementary students to express their vision for the present and future of the city.

At an event held at Casa de la Cultura in the Altamira neighborhood, the mayor acknowledged the efforts of participating students from several municipal elementary schools, as well as the crucial role of parents and teachers in education.

“Just by representing your school, you are already winners. By participating, you are demonstrating leadership, and that deserves recognition. I once sat where you are now, full of dreams—one day, I said I would become mayor of Tijuana. Never give up on what you want to be or where you want to go,” the mayor told students.

Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana wished the contestants success and said that this experience would be invaluable. He reaffirmed the full support of the 25th City Hall, stating that education is the foundation and pillar for societal development.

Miguel Alfredo Nuño García, Municipal Secretary of Public Education, noted that the mayor has prioritized activities where students actively contribute to shaping the Tijuana they wish to see. These are spaces where children not only express themselves but are genuinely heard and involved in decision-making.

“A mayor who is also a teacher is ensuring that boys and girls have access to the best schools and infrastructure, while making sure their voices matter and their rights are upheld,” the official stated.

The Secretary of Education also announced that, for the first time in nearly 20 years since its founding, Tijuana’s only municipal high school has been reclassified as a public school, allowing it to receive state and federal social assistance programs and aid. All of this under Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana’s administration.

Meanwhile, Wenceslao Canett Higuera, Inspector of Municipal Education Zone 21, reported that the contest includes students from 13 sixth-grade classes across 10 elementary schools. Participants will present topics such as: “The Importance of Gender Equality and Inclusion”, “Children’s Rights”, “I Am Proud to Live in Tijuana”, “The Importance of Education”, among others.
