Governor Marina del Pilar of Baja California Takes Major Step to Boost Fishing and Aquaculture Industries

Baja California ranks third nationwide in this industry, with at least 32,000 families involved in the fishing production chain.

Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda and the National Commissioner of Aquaculture and Fishing, Alejandro Flores Nava, signed a collaboration agreement and formalized the establishment of a council that will implement strategies for the sustainable growth of the industry aiming to strengthen the development of fishing and aquaculture in Baja California.

During the 29th session of the State Council for Fishing and Aquaculture, the importance of this agreement to improve the conditions of those who depend on these activities and ensure their long-term viability was highlighted. Special emphasis was placed on supporting women in the industry, in line with the national policy promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

“The agreement signed today, along with this council’s establishment, will promote fairer commercialization of our products and diversify development opportunities in fishing and aquaculture. You will never be alone. Fishermen will be supported by the government of Baja California and the government of Mexico,” she emphasized.

Governor Marina del Pilar pointed out that over Baja Californian 32,000 families are part of the fishing, aquaculture, and mariculture production chain. The fishing industry ranks third in value nationwide, while aquaculture ranks fourth.

She also noted that one of their main goals is to consolidate a historic modernization and strengthening of fishing producers, who were neglected in previous administrations. Hence, the importance of teamwork with CONAPESCA and the establishment of the council.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Flores Nava, head of CONAPESCA, stated that this industry is undergoing a restructuring process to ensure that all procedures begin and conclude in Baja California, without the need to manage them elsewhere.

This agreement marks the beginning of the implementation of programs that promote organization, training, and the responsible use of fishing resources. It will also enable a statewide industry census, strengthen inspection and surveillance, and drive actions for the transformation and conservation of seafood products.

Additionally, the agreement establishes guidelines to expedite the issuance of sport fishing permits, simplifying procedures for both nationals and foreigners engaging in this activity in the state, in full compliance with current regulations.

The session was attended by federal deputy Armando Fernández Samaniego, the general director of the Mexican Institute of Sustainable Fishing and Aquaculture (IMIPAS), Víctor Manuel Vidal Martínez; Baja California’s Secretary of Fishing and Aquaculture, Alma Rosa García Juárez; Mayor Claudia Agatón Muñiz of Ensenada, Mayor Rocío Adame of Playas de Rosarito, as well as representatives from the fishing industry.
