The ferry between Ensenada and San Diego is preparing to set sail, and Azteca Ferries, the company offering round and one-way trips to explore both cities, is finalizing its general policies and key points passengers need to know before boarding this new service.

Before Traveling

As policies are subject to change, Azteca Ferries recommends reviewing the latest details on its website before making a reservation. Should any modifications impact the service experience once booked, passengers will be informed through official communication channels.

One of the most important points to remember is that it’s the responsibility of each traveler to complete the necessary immigration procedures. Azteca Ferries urges passengers to confirm these requirements before their trip, as the company isn’t liable for any issues that arise with customs or immigration.

When it comes to modifying reservations, passengers can change the date, time, or name on their tickets, though these adjustments are subject to availability and could come with extra fees. In case of overbooking, the company will refund the full ticket price.

Boarding Requirements

Azteca Ferries may deny boarding to passengers who fail to provide the required documentation or pose a risk to the ferry’s operation. Make sure to bring your boarding pass and an official ID, and plan to arrive at least two hours before departure.

As for luggage, passengers are allowed to carry up to two carry-on bags, and there will be an extra fee for transporting musical instruments or sports equipment. It is advised that passengers do not pack valuables in checked luggage, as the company is not responsible for any losses or damages.

The ferry will also have facilities for passengers with reduced mobility, allowing the transport of wheelchairs and service animals at no additional cost. Pregnant women may travel without restrictions up to the 36th week of a single pregnancy or the 32nd week if they are carrying more than one baby.

Important Details to Keep in Mind

  • No cancellations will be accepted after the first 24 hours of booking, with a few exceptions.
  • Delays of less than four hours do not warrant compensation unless specified by the company’s policy.
  • Smoking is prohibited throughout the ferry.
  • Passengers with serious medical conditions are not allowed to travel, and those with minor illnesses (like varicella or rubella) will need a medical certificate.
  • You can download your boarding pass digitally, though passengers who are pregnant, traveling with minors, or with mobility impairments must get it at a check-in counter.
  • Fares may change based on demand.

Items You Can’t Bring Aboard

To ensure a safe and comfortable journey, Azteca Ferries has prohibited the following items:

  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Explosive or flammable substances
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Sharp objects
  • Drugs or illegal substances
  • Large lithium batteries

Passengers under 18 must travel with a parent or legal guardian, or provide a notarized permission document if accompanied by another adult.

Only dogs and cats are allowed on board, whether as pets, emotional support animals, or service animals.

When Will the Ferry Start Operating?

Kurt Honold Morales, head of Baja California’s Department of Economy and Innovation, has confirmed that Azteca Ferries will begin test trips in March, with the official launch scheduled for April, when the state will host the Tianguis Turístico 2025.

The ferry will be able to accommodate up to 330 passengers, though ticket prices are still undisclosed as negotiations continue with the Port of San Diego.
