Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed during her morning press conference that the long-awaited desalination plant in Playas de Rosarito is moving forward as part of the National Hydric Plan.

“Yes, we’re building it… The desalination plant in Baja California is happening,” Sheinbaum declared.

The news was met with enthusiasm at the local level. Rocío Adame, Mayor of Rosarito, quickly took to social media to celebrate the announcement, emphasizing the project’s importance for the region.

“The Rosarito desalination plant is now a certainty! President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed it’s on. This construction is essential for improving water supply in southern Rosarito and preserving our beaches,” Adame wrote.

Rosarito’s Desalination Plant: A Major Infrastructure Investment

The desalination plant is set to become a cornerstone of the National Hydric Plan’s infrastructure strategy, with a projected investment of 12 billion pesos (around $648 million). Designed as a greenfield project, it will produce 2,200 liters of potable water per second, ensuring a sustainable supply for the region.

According to Proyectos México, the most recent review of the project was conducted on March 12, with the involvement of Banobras and Fonadin.

Tourism and Sustainability: Key Priorities for Rosarito

Beyond expanding critical infrastructure, Rosarito’s government is actively working to enhance its reputation as a premier tourist destination. Mayor Rocío Adame’s administration is in the process of obtaining the National Tourism Quality Certification through the Tourism and Conventions Committee (COTUCO).

“This certification serves as an endorsement of a destination’s quality and sustainability,” stated Paul Corona Rodríguez, president of COTUCO Rosarito.

With ambitious investments in infrastructure, environmental responsibility, and tourism, Rosarito is poised to become a national model for regional progress.
