San Diego County law enforcement officers will be on the lookout Tuesday through Thursday for people driving while talking on a phone without a hands-free device or reading, writing or sending a text message on a cell phone.

A similar campaign in the county last year resulted in more than 1,000 citations for violating California's cell phone driving laws, the California Highway Patrol said.

"This year, cell phone campaigns will be a common occurrence throughout Southern California," said CHP Border Division Chief Jim Abele in a statement.

"Our goal is to increase awareness of the dangers of using hand held devices while driving," Abele said.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the law, particularly among one group of drivers.

According to the CHP, people distracted while driving, which includes texting and talking on cell phones, is the leading cause of death for teen-age drivers.
