Thursday, January 16, was the 73rd anniversary of the creation of the State of Baja California. In this article, we’ll explore what makes this land of opportunities, gastronomy, and natural wonders so unique.

History of the Founding of Baja California

Baja California officially became a state on January 16, 1952, when articles 43 and 45 of the Official Diary of the Federation were amended. Located at the end of northwestern Mexico, this state’s advantage is that it is surrounded mostly by water: to the east, the Gulf of California, and to the west, the vast Pacific Ocean.

The origin of its name is a combination of history and legend. It is believed that Spanish conquistadors got the name from “The Adventures of Esplandián,” a knightly novel by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo in 1510, which mentioned the mythical island of California. Another theory suggests that the name comes from the Moroccan-Catalan words “color” and “form,” used by Fray Junípero Sierra to describe the region’s intense heat, who said, “It is hotter here than in an oven.”

Over the years, this land has experienced several changes in its divisions and names. The Constitution of 1824 established the federal territory status of the provinces of Alta California and Baja California. However, in 1835, during the centralist period, the territory was divided into three parts: north, center, and south. Lastly, in 1887, it was reorganized into two political districts leading to the states as we know them today: Baja California Norte and Baja California Sur.

During this transitional period, local leaders in the region began to be appointed. These figures played a key role in the territory’s administration and development, an important step towards political and social establishment. The state’s history reflects the evolution and adaptation of Baja California as it became a significant region in Mexico.
