SEPESCA BC announces beginning of fishing season at Bahía de Los Ángeles

This bay is known for having brown and green octopus specimens that are bigger and more valuable than in other areas of the state

December has arrived and with that, the beginning of brown octopus (Octopus bimaculatus) and green octopus (Octopus hubbsorum) fishing season has begun at Reserva de la Biosfera Bahía de Los Ángeles, Canales de Ballenas y de Salsipuedes.

According to information by the Secretariat of Fishing and Aquaculture (SEPESCA BC), led by Alma Rosa García Juárez, the octopus ban in the region was promoted by organized fishermen at Bahía de los Ángeles, and in 2016, an agreement was made to respect it.

As such, the brown octopus ban lasts from August 1 to November 30, while the green octopus ban lasts from September 1 to November 30, so that both species can be captured on December 1st of each year.

At Bahía de los Ángeles, more than 80% of Baja California's octopus production is captured

According to numbers verified by the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishing (CONAPESCA), in 2022, more than 225 tons of live weighed captures were registered which were valued at 14.5 million pesos.

The head of SEPESCA BC recognized the commitment of Bahía de los Ángeles’ producers with putting into practice measures that guarantee the sustainability of marine species.
