The National Conference of Governors (CONAGO), led by Baja Californian Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, issued a statement rejecting the White House’s suggestion of alleged ties between the Mexican government and organized crime. The statement also expressed support for Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s stance.
The governors of CONAGO strongly condemned these unfounded accusations, which not only lack evidence but also ignore the firm and verifiable actions that the government of Mexico has implemented to combat drug trafficking.
Support for Mexico’s president by all governors, regardless of their political affiliation, was shown in the following declaration: “Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, our country has strengthened its fight against organized crime through concrete actions, such as the arrests of criminal leaders, strategic operations, and the reinforcing international cooperation in security matters. Mexico has shown its commitment to the rule of law and the protection of its citizens, acting with responsibility and determination.”

Drug Trafficking: A Binational Problem
The statement also pointed out that drug trafficking is a binational problem. While Mexico firmly confronts cartels, the demand for fentanyl and other drugs and the illegal trafficking of weapons that strengthens these criminal organizations come from the United States. They highlighted that the fight against organized crime cannot be unilateral but must be based on shared responsibility and effective cooperation between both nations.
They also warned that imposing tariffs on Mexican products could harm both the national and the United States’ economies, affecting workers and businesses in both countries, disrupting essential supply chains, and jeopardizing North America’s competitiveness.
From CONAGO, Mexico’s governors called for respect, dialogue, and cooperation as fundamental principles of the bilateral relationship. They warned that baseless accusations and unilateral economic measures not only harm both nations but also hinder the development of a region that has historically worked together for the benefit of its citizens.
